After four and half years sailing a catamaran halfway around the world, a family of four are back in Hong Kong.

Former Cable News reporter, Cam Highfield, her British husband Arni, a retired marine police officer, and their daughters Molly and Nancy docked her yesterday after a once-in-a-lifetime voyage that took them to 20 countries.

Molly, 11, blogged: "Wow! This is really, um ... how can I describe it? Well, it feels great being back in Hong Kong, but it also feels a bit unfamiliar. But it's good to be home."

Arni Highfield said the voyage allowed them to go to "places and meet people together as a family."

They plan to stay put in Hong Kong for a while, living in their catamaran, Jade, and see if they can get used to being back in home port.

Cam, a Hong Kong-Chinese, who home-schooled their daughters, said it was not much different from regular school except that they did not have classmates.

Their journey took them through the South Pacific, then back to the northern hemisphere up through Guam and Micronesia, Japan and South Korea.

The voyage fulfilled Arni's dream of traveling the world in a yacht.

"It was Arni - otherwise Mr Highfield - who started having the idea of traveling the world on a yacht," Cam said of her husband's dream.

According to the family website, Arni Highfield joined the merchant navy in England, at 16.

He later became a marine police officer in Hong Kong.

As he approached retirement, finally, he edged was closer to his dream, by reading a mountains of yachting magazines.

Then he joined the Hebe Haven Yacht Club in Hong Kong and acquired Paloma, his first sailing yacht, a 22-foot Sonata.

Later, the family bought Rafiki, a 40-foot yacht. As retirement loomed, Highfield decided to buy a new catamaran from the United States, a Manta 42-footer.

The family sailed out of Hong Kong on the QEII to England, a perk of Highfield's civil service retirement package.

From England, the family flew to Florida to fetch Jade, their catamaran. In May 2005, they set sail from Florida.

"We've been to more than 20 countries in our 4-year voyage," Cam Highfield wrote in a recent magazine article.

"Some of the most fascinating were the wild animals of the Galapagos, the people in the Cook Islands and Guam, and the culture in Vanuatu."

NGO takes up case of prodigy's schooling

Hong Kong Unison to complain about education department's inability to find suitable establishment for gifted Indian student, citing discrimination A long-running wrangle over an ethnic Indian boy took a new turn yesterday when an NGO said it would file a complaint with the equal opportunity watchdog against the Education Bureau for failing to find a proper school for the pupil.

Hong Kong Unison said it would lodge its complaint with the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) on behalf of Arjun Singh. This comes after Unison's threat last month to take the government to court for failing to provide equal education opportunities for ethnic minorities.

Singh, 12, a member of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, has been schooled at home for the past two years because his parents said they could not find a school to satisfy his special learning needs. Singh has an IQ of 120 to 129 - which is near the benchmark of 130 for prodigies - according to a cognitive test he took using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.

Several schools refused his parents' demand to admit Singh into a more advanced class; he would have entered Secondary One in the new academic year.

Unison executive director Fermi Wong Wai-fun said she would submit a racial discrimination complaint to the EOC. She criticised the Education Bureau for failing to find a proper school for Singh and showing indifference to the pupil when he sought help. "This would not happen if
he was not Indian," she said.

Unison is also collecting support from 100 families in its bid to sue the government for failing to offer ethnic minorities a chance to integrate into Hong Kong society through the education system. It says local schools have failed to provide quality Chinese-language education to ethnic minorities, hindering their chances to climb the social ladder.

Human rights lawyer Chong Yiu-kwong said it would be hard to prove Singh (pictured) had been the object of racial discrimination, because he sought a gifted education in English.

Inequality arising from language barriers would be a form of indirect discrimination that was difficult to substantiate, he said.

EOC chairman Lam Woon-kwong said recently that Singh's parents had played a role in their son's predicament, deciding to withdraw him from school in 2009. "If they can afford it, there are many types of English schools in Hong Kong," he said.

But it was odd that the Education Bureau had failed to find a proper school for the boy in two years.
"It is strange that a 12-year-old could be staying at home without having to go to school," he said. "If the problem lay with the schools, the Education Bureau should have helped him find one."

An Education Bureau spokeswoman said it had tried to help Singh find a school since 2009, when they first learned of his case. The bureau would not say how many pupils are
homeschooled in Hong Kong.

Child prodigy Arjun Singh left out on a limb

Arjun Singh aspires to be Hong Kong's youngest ethnic Indian to enter university. But the 12-year-old does not even have a secondary school to go to.

The physics prodigy has spent endless hours in the past two years on a whiteboard at his home to memorise formulae and practise university entrance exam questions.

He recently received four As and a B in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, equivalent to Hong Kong's now defunct Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination.

He is one of the very few pupils allowed to study at home under Hong Kong's compulsory education laws.

"I have no peers. I would like to have an association with people of the same age," Singh said. "I have a flexible schedule. I can study on Sunday and play on weekdays."

In 2009, then a fifth-grader, he withdrew from an international school which refused to upgrade him.

Since then, according to his mother Anita Singh, he has not been able to find a school, either because the schools said they did not have the resources to take him or they only taught in Chinese.

"Hong Kong does not have enough facilities to cater for the needs of gifted children," she said.

In Hong Kong, there are more than 10,000 gifted children based on international criteria that define prodigies as the top 2 per cent of the pupil population.

But many schools may not be equipped to treat these pupils with care, according to Fred Lam Yun-fu of the Hong Kong Association of Parents of Gifted Children.

"In elite schools, these children can be allowed to learn separately. But smaller schools may have problems in dealing with them," Lam said.

One teacher at an Islamic school said schools for ethnic minorities faced constraints. "If there are four or five students, they can go to split classes, but usually there is just one," he said.

Stephen Tommis, executive director of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, said: "A lot of schools need to take the concept of gifted education on board and understand the needs of gifted learners. We are recommending that every school should have a gifted education manager. We are working with the government."

The government currently provides guidelines for school heads to provide "accelerated learning" for talented children.

In response to Singh's case, the Education Bureau said the authorities encouraged and supported schools to cater for the needs of their gifted students through a school-based approach.

Anita Singh said the government should better train local teachers to cater for the needs of ethnic minorities. "It's not just my son. I suspect there are many who are not recognised and their talent wasted. They may become the worst kids at schools," she said.

Her son, who is studying for examinations that would gain him admission to a United States university, said there were many who could not fit in.

2012-08-20 sina

Apps

Apps

http://ramsss.com/hk/jobs
